Paul starts this passage with a solemn oath that shows the importance of the message he is delivering. Paul points out that the goal of his first letter was to correct sin within the church. The purpose of all discipline should lead to repentance and restoration. The church members should forgive as well, lest a rift and discord continue within the church.
