The birth rights and responsibilities of the first born is a foreign concept in our country today. As we saw with the blessings and inheritances of the previous 2 generations, God and Jacob changed the order of priorities with both his own sons and the first 2 sons of Joseph.  Although powerful and exalted in his own right, Joseph revered and honored his father. Jacob lifted Joseph above his brothers and gave him the birthright and blessing.
