When Joseph’s brothers returned to their father they were delayed by Jacob’s fear. As the famine grew worse and the family used up the grain, the older brothers were able to convince Jacob to release Benjamin and let them return to Egypt. We now see Judah and Joseph had already eclipsed the role of the first born Reuben, in Egypt and in the family. This discord and turmoil will continue with their descendants and their tribes.
