God’s preservation and protection continue in the life of Jacob. In this passage the God of Jacob’s ancestors becomes the God of a humbled Jacob, now called Israel. Jacob, who had always relied on his own intellect, strength or cunning would be crippled but rely on God’s divine grace. Jacob’s meeting with his brother and his small army shows how grateful Jacob is for God’s unmerited favor and his prosperity.
