David’s offer to build a permanent  “house” for God seems reasonable to all but God has other ideas. While David’s motives aren’t questioned, God instead creates a covenant for Him and his descendants. God uses the term “my servant,” which was rarely mentioned elsewhere. David’s son would instead build God’s temple and the other promises would eventually be fulfilled through Jesus.
