Many months after Zacharias had seen the angel, Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist. During that time many marveled at their good fortune in their old age. When the baby was born and circumcised, his father spoke again to settle an argument over the child’s name, thus fulfilling the prophecy. John’s roles and status as well as his indwelling by the Holy Spirit make him unique in the Bible.
