Can you imagine how difficult this short passage would have been to hear in context? Jesus here, as He did so often, completely challenged the perception of everyone listening. To be told that your understanding is wrong and that those you’ve looked up to aren’t right with God must have been devastating. Imagine a life where everything is graded by intent instead of what you did or got away with.
