We can ignore Saul taking credit for his victories, but his placing the mood of the people over following God’s commands led him to sin by practicing rituals that were set aside for priests. As punishment for this Saul’s family would not create a dynasty and his heir, Jonathan (who probably would have made a good and righteous king), would never reign.
