Deuteronomy here gives us a warning against self-righteousness where the Israelites (and we) tend to believe that our own righteousness defeats the enemy – not so! Anytime we entertain the notion that we are deserving of anything, it’s time to re-examine our motives. While in one sense this is true, we, of ourselves, have no standing for any display of grace.
