John: One does not get very far into the gospel of John when he encounters “light” for the first time. “What has come into being was life, and the life was the light of all people (1:4b). So light, among the other things, plays an important role in John’s gospel along with other poetic metaphors. To mention but a couple more: water and the gate. From chapter 1 John refers to Jesus as “light” and here in chapter 8 Jesus call Himself “the light of the world.” (8:12)
