Psalm: 89

Meditation

Mark: The death of John the baptizer. King Herod (this one being Antipas) took it upon himself to marry his brother Philip’s wife. Under the Law this was not acceptable (at least while Philip was alive). Herodias (with a name like that must have been somehow related to King Herod the Great famous for the “new” Temple and infamous for the slaughter of the innocents in and around Bethlehem at Jesus’ birth), wanted John dead but, for some reason, Herod (Antipas) was reluctant to comply. Enter Herodias’ daughter who, after consulting with her evil mother, seals John’s fate.

Gospel:

Mark 6:13-29

New Testament:

Galatians 2:11-21

Old Testament:

Isaiah 49:1-12
