Isaiah: Several times in the Scripture the LORD talks of “divorcing” His people. This is one such instance. Notice in the same verse (1) that the reason for the divorce is because of sin and transgression. The only sin or transgression worthy of divorce from God would be unfaithfulness (idolatry) or a violation of the First Commandment: a prohibition against any god but the LORD. The LORD takes a dim view of divorce, however, as noted in Malachi 2:16. This business of idolatry God takes far more seriously than either the Jews of ancient times or, in fact, than we do today.
