Psalms: 42, 43

Meditation

James: Faith vs. Works. This is one, if not the most divisive point resulting from the Reformation (perhaps equal to the Lord’s Supper [Communion]). Unfortunately, good Christians are wont to reduce everything to “either/or” (or “neither/nor”). Not so fast! James’ example of the poor soul lacking both food and clothing is intended as hyperbole. It has to be, anyone who would dismiss such an unfortunate with “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill…” (v. 16) would be guilty of an egregious violation of Christ’s law of love.

Gospel:

Luke 16:19-31

New Testament:

James 2:14-26

Old Testament:

Hab. 2:1-4, 9-20
