 John: Jesus could certainly read a crowd. The crowd numbered about 5,000 people, who by now, after having followed Him for who knows how long, were hungry. These people followed Jesus because of His signs in healing the sick. Put bluntly, the crowd wanted what they could get from Him. Some kid presented 5 barley loaves and a couple of fish to help. You know what happened next. Chapter 6 of John’s gospel focuses primarily on bread and Jesus’ discourse at the end of the chapter will drive many away. Consider the manna in the wilderness in Moses’ day.
