Joshua: I am reasonably convinced that the people who said “No, we will serve the LORD.” (v. 19) is more of an emotional response rather than one thought out. It is true that the experience of these Hebrews was that they had witnessed how the LORD had driven out the indigenous peoples just as He had said. This generation of Israelites, however, did not, of themselves, witness the Egypt experience. If we were to revisit Moses’ books (Genesis – Deuteronomy) we would see numerous revolts by these “stiff-necked” people. Do you really think things have changed?
