Psalms: 123, 130

Meditation

Mark: Mark is a little subdued in this reading which is rife with miracles. This is not “flash and dash” – as in say the Transfiguration some time later. It is sad enough that verse 52 tells us of the Apostles lack of faith after the feeding of the 5,000 (vv. 30-44) but as He walks on the water, they jump to the conclusion Jesus is a ghost. Jesus tells them “It is I” and do not fear but nonetheless they were terrified. There were strict rules in believing in ghosts and “bringing them up” (1Samuel 28). Jesus gets into the boat and they moor at Gennesaret (part of non-Jewish Decapolis) and Jesus there heals many who are sick or infirmed.

Gospel:

Mark 6:47-56

New Testament:

1 Corinthians 9:16-27

Old Testament:

Genesis 47:1-26
