Joshua: The land of Canaan was not a unified entity but rather a collection of what might be called city-states; each city with its own king. Gibeon was one such city-state. Israel’s reputation had preceded it even to the point of Moses’ dictate that Israel shall have all the land. The Gibeonites, costumed themselves in old worn-out clothes and shoes, and for victuals brought moldy bread. They lied to Joshua and told him they had travelled far to get to him for protection. Joshua made a treaty with them without first seeking the LORD. Now Joshua (Israel) had to honor that pact.
