Ecclesiasticus: These opening lines set the tone of the book – dismal. The most recognizable expression is “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” This term “vanity” is not exactly what you may think. This word in Hebrew may refer to “vapor” or “breath”. Oddly enough, the term “breath” is also used to describe God – the breath of life. Solomon used the above expression (vanity ….) 38 times throughout the book as though to underscore his message.
