Matthew: “But when you give to the needy, do not set your left hand now what our right hand is doing.” (Matt. 6:3) That is the kind of thing going on here. These righteous served their neighbors with no thought of recognition or reward for themselves but rather because it was the right thing to do. They, in serving the image-bearers of God were also serving Christ. Interestingly, they were surprised at how God saw their actions. Thus, their fate.
