Revelation: Both ends of this reading are at extreme odds with each other. The opening (and bulk of the passage) is of a glorious and victorious overcoming whereas the latter part describes what’s in store when the Lord says: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.” As provocative as the description may be, it does have a ring of familiarity to it. The “New Jerusalem” was also seen by Ezekiel (Ch 40ff.) and Isaiah (Ch.  25) about death.
