Matthew: Notice what is at issue here: man’s word (tradition) vs. God’s word. In an effort to safeguard against ever offending against God’s word, the teachers (some as far back as 800 years before Crist) put practices in place which would later become “traditions” – i.e., man’s word. Jesus has to explain the obvious to His disciples about what makes a man unclean. Well, it becomes obvious once He explains it.
