Psalms: 69

Meditation

Matthew: this is Matthew’s account of the death of John the Baptist. It is Herod Antipas’ birthday and he gives to Herodias’ daughter the head of John the Baptist (at the behest of her mother). When Jesus heard of this He withdrew to a solitary place. The death of John was very significant to Him. He could easily have been considered the last of the OT prophets and for him to be murdered is a grave matter: — for so they murdered the prophets: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you.” (Matt. 23:37)

Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21

New Testament: Revelation 15:1-8

Old Testament: Ezra 7:27-28; 8:21-36
