John: There are at least two confessions of faith in this reading: Philip and Nathanael. Philip says something curious as he speaks with Nathanael: “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the law and about whom the prophets also wrote…” (v. 45) Nathanael’s response to Jesus (and thus to himself): “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” (v. 46) Nathanael confesses: “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” (v. 49) What kind of Messiah King were they looking for?
