What does it mean to be good?

[Hint to parents: Good is when we treat others the way God wants us to; when we love others the way God loves us.]

Does God love us because we are good or are we good because God loves us?

Memorize 1 John 4:19 for the answer.

We love because he first loved us?

We are good because God was good to us first. We treat others the way God has treated us.

How has God been good to us? [Have the kids think of the ways God has been good to us.]

God wants us to “stick to what is good.” (Romans 12:9) Let’s find out what that means.

Lesson

Being good has three parts in Romans 12:9-21.

1. “Good” to those in the church. (Romans 12:10, 13)

2. “Good” when life gets hard. (Romans 12:11-12)

3. “Good” to those outside the church (Romans 12:14-21)

Read Romans 12:10, 13 together.

Paul describes in Romans 12:10, 13 how to be “good” to those in the church.

Make a list of what “good” looks like as we love others in the church.

[Hint to parents: brotherly love means loving like family.]

Which things are easy for us? Which things are hard? Why?

“Good” when life gets hard. (Romans 12:11-12)

Read Romans 12:11-12

Make a “do” / “don’t” chart and put on this chart what “good” does and does not do when life gets hard.

Which things are easy for us? Which things are hard? Why?

[Hint to parents: lacking zeal means that someone has given up.]

“Good” to those outside the church (Romans 12:14-21)

Read Romans 12:14-21 together. Make another “do” and “don’t” chart as you did for the last section.

Which things are easy for us? Which things are hard?

Sticking to the good means doing and not doing the things Paul tells us in Romans 12:9-21.

Respond.

Have each person in the family pick one item from each of the three charts (“good” to church, “good” when life gets hard and “good” to outsiders) that they will try to do this week.

How can believing that God loves us help us?

Pray for each other to be good the way God has been good to us.

Share.

What is one simple thing you learned this week that you can share with someone else? Who will you share it with? Make a plan to share what you learned this week with this person.
