What does a farmer need to be a good farmer?
[Hint to parents: a farmer needs patience, because he has to wait patiently for the seeds to grow and for the rains to come at the right time.]
Why is it hard to be patient?
Let’s find out why it is important for us to be patient and what we are waiting for.
Life was really hard for the people James is writing to. They don’t have a lot of money. They are hungry because they don’t have a lot of food and people are being mean to them because they follow Jesus. How would you feel if this was happening to you?
What would you want God to do for you?
What if God took a long time to answer your prayer, how would you feel?
Let’s find out how James encouraged these followers of Jesus to be patient and wait for God.
Read James 5:7-8 together.
How should we be patient like a farmer?
If a farmer is waiting for a harvest, what are we waiting for?
[Hint to parents: James is telling us that we should wait patiently for Jesus’ coming.]
What will the world be like when Jesus comes? What will we see? What won’t we see?
Do you know how long we have been waiting for Jesus to come back? 2,000 years. God always answers prayers, but sometimes he is slow and we have to learn to wait for him. We can’t give up.
How can we wait patiently for Jesus? What should we do?
What can happen to us if we get impatient?
Read James 5:9 together to find out what we shouldn’t do
What does James warn us can happen if we get impatient?
[Hint to parents: Sometimes when we get impatient, it gets hard to love people.]
[Activity: Here’s something to do as a family to remind you of waiting patiently for God. Find some seeds in the house, fruit, vegetables, whatever you have around and then plant them, either in the house or out in the yard. Keep track of your progress throughout the summer. How long does it take for the seeds to sprout? Which seeds grow faster? Why is it good to patiently wait for your seeds to grow?]
