Obadiah: The Edomites (which don’t exist any longer) lived to the southeast of Israel and were closely related to the Jews. Edom sprang from Esau, Jacob’s older brother. Esau talked himself out of his birthright – he would later claim that Jacob “stole” it from him. Thus, the enmity. When the Babylonians overran Jerusalem the Edomites were on hand to cheer them on in stead of helping Israel. Edom will be judged by God for this.
