1 John: Just enough is left out of this passage to make it difficult to understand. The terms “fathers”, “young men”, and “children” may refer to the readers of the letter or the terms may be an indication of spiritual maturity. John also gave us the gospel of John which opens with a description of “him who is from the beginning”, the Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:1-18 is perhaps the most eloquent passage of all of scripture: “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)
