Mark: “Everyone will be salted with fire.” (v. 49) I must confess, I had not noticed that verse before though I’d be at a loss to tell you how many times I may have read it. When Jesus was speaking above of cutting off limbs and plucking out eyes, He was being metaphoric. The sin is not in the limb or the eye, it is in the heart – cutting these out will not remove the sin, only Christ can do that. But being “salted with fire” may mean trials for the Christian and damnation for the lost (damned).
