Memorize this verse as a family:
John 1:41-42a: The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (this is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.
Listen. In the season of Epiphany we are learning stories about Jesus that show us what he is like. Through John the Baptist (read together John 1:29-35), we learn that Jesus is:
- The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. In the Old Testament, a lamb was sacrificed. This was a picture of Jesus, who, like the lamb, would die in our place to take away our sins.
- The Son of God. Jesus is the beloved Son of God.
If this is who Jesus is, what will we do? Jesus’ friends, Simon and Andrew, will show us the way:
Read John 1:35-42 together. So, Andrew was with John when John pointed to Jesus and said, “Look, the Lamb of God.”
- What did Andrew do right away?
Disciples like Andrew followed teachers in order to learn to live like their teacher. Andrew was following John, until he found Jesus. Now Andrew is following Jesus. He wants to learn how to live and love like Jesus. What is the first thing Andrew does after he starts following Jesus? (see verse 41-42).
Activity. Search through the Bible and start making a list of the things Jesus taught us. One place you can start is Matthew 5-7 (the Sermon on the Mount) and Luke 6:20-49.
Respond. How can we be like Andrew? How can we follow Jesus like Andrew? How can we together learn to live like Jesus?
Share. Andrew invited Peter to follow Jesus with him. Who will we invite to follow Jesus with us? [I suggest you make a list of some people and start praying for them daily as family. You can pray that God will work through the circumstances of their lives so that they are open to following Jesus and also that God gives you chances to invite them.]
