New Year’s Day

Psalm: 12, 14

Meditation

John: [New Year’s Day] This is, perhaps, not monumental day in the Church calendar but one I hold dear. When I was a child it was called the “Feast of the Circumcision”. The significance is two-fold: (1) it commemorates that the Law was kept (circumcised on the 8th day); and (2) this is the first time the Son of God shed His blood. I am at a loss to explain why this passage was chosen for this day. Jesus says He had been speaking figuratively – i.e., using figures of speech or parables. Now He speaks Plainly”. (v. 19)

Gospel: John 16:23-30

New Testament: Colossians 2:6-12

Old Testament: Genesis 17:1-12, 15-16
