Psalm: 34

Meditation

2 Peter: The teachings of Jesus often run counter to what our culture deems acceptable. It is very tempting to accommodate what Jesus taught with our cultural preferences. This is the false teaching that concerned Peter. It was a real problem in the New Testament world. It is a real problem today. In Peter’s world, ideas of a resurrection and the dignity of slaves and the poor seemed ludicrous. Today Jesus’ ethics regarding sex or the treatment of the poor, the widow and the immigrant grate against our cultural sensibilities. We must stay true to what Jesus taught.

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8

New Testament: 2 Peter 2:1-10

Old Testament: Isaiah 9:8-17
