Luke: Jon’s role as the point-man for the Messiah placed him in a rather unique situation. He was ascetic in his response to God whereas Jesus was less so – it didn’t matter because Scribes and Pharisees rejected both approaches to the Messiah. So John’s preeminence stems from his role as herald of the Christ. No one greater … until Jesus had established His kingdom where even the least there proved to be greater than John.
