Listen. If Jesus’ death is enough to pay for all our sins, why not sin more so that we can get more grace and forgiveness from God? That is the question Paul answers in Romans 6:1-14 and he answers this question by pointing to our baptism.
This is the picture baptism gives us. When we are put under the water, our old self is buried with Jesus. When we are pulled up out of the water, we are rising with Christ into a new life.
Two things are true about this new life: First, Jesus took away death, which is the penalty for sin. Jesus can’t die again in his new life. We will rise from the dead into eternal life, where we can’t die either. Second, Jesus died to break the power of sin. We don’t have to be slaves to it any more. Jesus has given us the power to live and love like Jesus did. The question is: do we believe we have been set free?
Since we have been set free, why would we want to go back to slavery to sin which leads to death?
Discussion. How would your life change if you truly believed that the penalty of your sin has been taken away because Jesus died for you? How would your life change if you truly believed that Jesus broke the power of sin and you are a slave to it no longer? What would you stop doing? What would you start doing?
Set Goals. What will you do to help you remember that Jesus has not only died to save you from sin’s penalty, death, but also from sin’s power? Be personal and specific. If you haven’t been baptized yet, what’s holding you back? Talk to us about getting baptized.
