Psalms: 97, 99

Matthew: Like both Elijah and Elisha, Jesus healed the daughter of a foreign (Syrophoenician) woman. This is awkward on several levels 1) this was a foreign woman seeking help – as a non-Jew Jesus left Himself open to becoming unclean. 2) Her being a woman also would have been unusual in that culture. And 3) her daughter was healed in Jesus’ absence. The translations regarding “dogs (v. 26) do not take into account the cultural aspects of the words. These “dogs” were of the household pet variety.

Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28

New Testament: 1 Corinthians 4:9-16

Old Testament: Micah 6:1-8
