John: The thing most of us forget about this passage is that “it was almost time for the Jewish Passover”. (v. 55) This is the same Passover before which Jesus would die – the point is that Jesus’ time was short and there was so much yet to do So six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Lazarus’ house. Judas raises the same question as we do today – we do much hand -wringing over the plight of the poor but I think we believe that poverty can be cured. If history has taught us anything it is “You will always have the poor among you.” (v. 12:8) Until Jesus returns we will always have the poor among us.
