Job: Job continues to be taunted by his “friends” and finally asks for a “showdown” with God. Job knows he had a righteous relationship with God and only wants to know “WHY?” all this stuff is happening to him. Reasonable. So Job throws down the gauntlet challenging God to meet him on a level playing field: “Show me my offense and my sin.” (v. 23b) Personally I wouldn’t do that because I know most (I think) of all my sins and would not be righteous enough to expose myself to public scrutiny. So Job must have been fairly (!) righteous.
