Matthew: These are the opening verses of Jesus’ most well-known sermon. He starts each statement with the word “blessed” a term no one uses anymore. How can we best put “blessed” in to modern jargon? Literally the word means “Happy” – well, we don’t use that word much except before “birthday” or “Thanksgiving” or occasionally before “Christmas” (as the British are wont to do). Maybe “favored”?
Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12
New Testament: Revelation 5:1-14
Old Testament: Job 11:1-9, 13-20
