Memorize these two verses as a family:

Philippians 3:17: Join with others following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.

Philippians 3:20: But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Listen: Paul didn’t just tell people to follow Jesus; he showed them how in the way he lived. He gave them a pattern to follow. Following Jesus means that our real home is in heaven and our real hope is that Jesus is coming back to live with us. Not following Jesus means doing whatever makes us happy right now no matter who it hurts (see Philippians 3:18-19).

Discuss. What kinds of things do we do when we only care about making ourselves happy and we don’t care about anyone else? How does believing that our real home is in heaven and our real hope is Jesus coming to live with us help us love others like Jesus did?
