Listen. The Bible compares a healthy disciple (follower) of Jesus to a tree. The root system of that tree, which keeps us standing during the storms of life, is our identity. If our identity is rooted in who we are in Christ, our tree will be able to stand. If our identity is rooted in anything else, we will fall.
Paul describes our “in Christ” identity in Galatians 3:26-4:7. If we belong to Jesus we are all sons and daughters of God. He has adopted us into his family. We are heirs of his promise of eternal life in a completely restored world where God will live with us forever.
God sent his Son to set us free and make us his children. God sent his Holy Spirit, “the spirit of adoption” to remind us that we are his adopted children.
Reflect. What does the world we live in say about who we are? How is this communicated to us? What are some of the things we have attempted to root our identity (other than God)? Why are these alternate root systems unable to keep us standing?
Why does it matter that we are God’s adopted children and heirs of his promises?
Set Goals. Psalm 1 reminds us that the righteous, those who are like trees planted by streams of water, meditate on God’s word. There are several Scriptures on the back of this handout that tell us who we are in Christ.
- Make a plan to “chew on” these “identity” Scriptures this week. Make a personal and specific plan to listen to what it is saying, reflect on it and respond to it.
- Who is one person in my life that I can share this with?
Our Identity in Christ
Matthew 6:9 “This then is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.”
John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
1 John 3:1a How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!
Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. and by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Galatians 3:26-27 You are all sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, or you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.
Paul’s response to being adopted by God
Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.
