Prayer Psalm: 23

Prayer Point. God’s way is a journey that leads us to the house of the LORD, but takes us through the valleys of the shadow of death. It is difficult journey, but God promises to be with us everywhere we go. Meditate on the promises this psalm offers us and prayer for the faith to believe them.

Matthew 5:17-20

Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you are reading.

Read. Read the passage slowly either alone or in a group and answer the following questions:

Listen. What is the passage saying? What are the main points? Using the following background as a guide.

Background. It appeared to many that Jesus came to destroy the teachings of Moses and the Jewish Prophets.  What did Jesus come to do with the Law and the Prophets? The truth is that we have all broken the Law of God. Jesus came to fulfill the Law by keeping it perfectly, dying the death the Law demanded for our sin, and breaking the power of sin in our lives so that one day we one day we also will keep the law perfectly. That is the only way our righteousness could exceed that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who had a reputation for meticulous keeping, but not perfectly, the law of Moses. Will the righteousness of the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law be sufficient to enter the kingdom of heaven?

Obey. What is God asking me to do?

Repent. How have I failed to obey what God is asking me to do? Confess those failures to God and ask for his forgiveness.

Believe. Which of God’s promises would I need to believe in order to obey and share what I have read?

Share. What can I share and with whom can I share it?

Final Prayer. Pray for the faith to believe the promises of God so that you might obey and share what you have learned.

The Corinthian Christians were not unlike American Christians. Because of our success economically we begin to believe that we possess a wisdom that is superior to others. But it is that kind of pride that leads to divisions in the church and stunts our growth as Christians.
